Roma's Serger University

*Did you buy a new serger and don’t know what to do with it? If you don’t have one, have you wondered what exactly a serger is and what can you accomplish with it? Regardless of what serger you have, you will learn how they work after this class. Everyone will be using a Babylock Triumph serger for the next 3 days!
* After the next few days you will know what they do and how they do it! Sergers eliminate extra steps both in construction and decorative techniques, as well as create beautiful finished edges. One of the many advantages of a serger is that it cuts, seams and finishes (overcasts) all in one operation. You will have a professional look in only a fraction of the time and with much less effort. You still need your sewing machine but think of it as a companion to your serger. They go together like your stove top and oven (microwave too!).
* For years, serger finishes have been widely used solely on the inside of garments for overcasting seams and construction. Now, sergers can not only finish the inside seams but create beautiful hems, quilting, piecing, top finishes and wonderful home décor items.

You will learn in the workshop:
* 1. All the parts of your machine and receive labels to make it easier to remember what those dials and knobs are for.
* 2. What is the difference between a 4 thread and an 8 thread machine? Why 8??
* 3. No tensions?? How do I do this? Relax --- it’s automatic!
* 4. How to utilize the Differential Feed and when to make an adjustment.
* 5. How to use many feet and attachments and how to apply them to your garment/project.
* 6. Needles!!! How, when and why you are to change those needles – and not just when they break!
* 7. Basic serging stitches, Flatlocking, Wave Stitch, Piping, Zippers, 5 thread safety stitch – using both ‘sides’ of your machine, True rolled and flat, balanced hems, Elastic insertion – the garment industry way, Specialty threading, increasing Overlock needle tensions, Heavy decorative threads, serging curves, Inside corners, Coverhems, Blindhems and so much more! As a bonus you will learn a couple of special threading techniques not in any book!
* Thread – what is preferable and what isn’t.
* When to use what stitch and best of all why Babylock sergers are THE best and easiest!

Instructor Bio:
RoseMary Keene is a leading serger expert and has taught on sergers, specifically Babylock, since 2000. She began her own 3 day workshop program recently, titled ?Roma?s Serger University?. She began her sewing ?career? at age 10 like so many did and didn?t venture out to sergers until 1998. In the world of educators in the sewing industry, she brings a lot to the table for people new to sergers, as well as those who have been serging for a long time. Having taught on sergers for nearly 20 years she is extremely experienced and teaches groups from 15 to 60 in attendance in not only techniques but in quality projects as well.
She has been a Clothing and Textiles Advisor (CTA) in the State of Washington since 1999 and led a local American Sewing Guild group for many years. She was trained through Washington State University in textiles. She, along with her husband, own and operate a small manufacturing business and a portion of that is also machine embroidery/sewing/serging. Since 2000 she worked full time in retail and taught at two Babylock Sew-n-Vac dealerships and taught Sue Green-Baker Serger Workshops from 2012-2019. She retired early from dealerships in order to educate exclusively through workshops. These workshops involve traveling to Babylock dealers throughout the U.S. and she is highly recommended by those dealers. She also worked with Wonderfil Threads, a Canadian based, international thread company and educated students in workshops on specialty threads. She leads a community focus group that makes reusable bags for the local grocery stores and food banks as their goal is to eliminate plastic bags in her county. She runs the community?s sewing lending library for the community as well.
Her past experiences also include teaching on embroidery software, specifically Babylock/Brother software as well as quilting, needle and thread knowledge, machine maintenance classes and private serger/sewing instruction.
Her experience in leading workshops comes from a background of educating families as well as doctors, educators, lawyers, teachers, employees from L & I, and others in brain injury. She taught how to integrate students back into the educational system after sustaining a brain injury as well as how families can deal with the tragedy that occurred, along with rehab techniques. She was instrumental in getting the motorcycle helmet law passed in Washington State as well as TBI programs in many school districts.
